RETIREMENT COACHING FOR COUPLES
You’ve Planned for Retirement.
Have You Planned for It Together?
Retirement changes more than your calendar. It reshapes your routines, roles, relationships, and sense of purpose. Couples coaching helps you turn two individual visions into one shared next chapter—without losing what matters to either of you.
A thoughtful, practical coaching process—not therapy, financial planning, or marriage counseling.
Creating a shared vision for retirement—together.
THE SHARED RETIREMENT QUESTION
Two Successful Retirements Do Not Automatically Create One Successful Retirement
You may share a home, a history, and a financial plan—but still hold very different pictures of daily life after work. Those differences are normal. Left unspoken, however, they can create frustration, distance, or disappointment at the very moment you expected greater freedom.
Different Visions
One of you imagines travel and adventure. The other values home, community, and stability.
Different Rhythms
One wants a full calendar. The other wants time, space, and a slower pace.
Changing Roles
Work once created structure, identity, and independence. Retirement changes how you relate to each other.
Purpose After Work
One partner may feel energized by retirement while the other misses contribution, relevance, or direction.
Together and Apart
Healthy retirement requires both shared experiences and room for individual interests.
Family and Money
Adult children, grandchildren, aging parents, lifestyle choices, and spending can surface new expectations.
WHEN RETIREMENT BECOMES REAL
Good Relationships Can Still Be Tested by Major Change
Retirement often increases the amount of time couples spend together while removing the routines that once gave each partner independence, identity, and structure.
Questions that seemed theoretical can quickly become practical:
- How much time do we really want to spend together?
- Where do we want to live?
- How active or relaxed should our days feel?
- What will give each of us purpose?
- How will we make decisions when our priorities differ?
The goal is not to eliminate every difference. It is to understand those differences, talk about them productively, and create agreements that respect both partners.
Instead of asking, “Who is right?” couples begin asking, “What kind of life are we trying to create—and how can it include both of us?”
THE FIVE Ps™ FOR COUPLES
A Shared Framework for Designing What Comes Next
The Five Ps™ help you move beyond vague hopes and have practical conversations about the life you want to build—individually and together.
Purpose
What gives each of us meaning now? Where do our individual callings overlap?
People
Which relationships and communities matter most? How will we stay connected?
Projects
What do we want to learn, build, contribute to, or pursue—together and separately?
Pace
What rhythm supports our energy, health, freedom, and need for both activity and rest?
Passion
What brings joy, curiosity, vitality, and a sense of being fully alive?
HOW COUPLES COACHING WORKS
Structured Conversations. Practical Agreements. A Shared Direction.
The process gives both partners equal space to reflect, be heard, and turn insight into decisions and action.
1. Listen Individually
Clarify what each partner hopes for, worries about, and needs from this transition.
2. Identify Alignment and Differences
Make expectations visible without labeling one vision as better than the other.
3. Explore the Five Ps™
Examine purpose, people, projects, pace, and passion through a shared-retirement lens.
4. Make Practical Choices
Translate conversations into agreements about time, space, priorities, routines, and experiments.
5. Build Your Shared Roadmap
Create a flexible plan that supports the relationship and each partner’s individuality.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions Couples Often Ask
Is couples coaching the same as marriage counseling?
No. Couples coaching focuses on retirement alignment, expectations, communication, choices, and forward-looking action. It is not therapy and does not diagnose or treat relationship or mental-health conditions.
Do we attend every session together?
Most sessions are designed for both partners. Depending on the engagement and what best supports the work, brief individual reflection or individual sessions may also be incorporated with clear boundaries and mutual understanding.
What if one of us is more enthusiastic than the other?
That is common. Coaching does not require identical enthusiasm. It creates room for both partners to express what they want, what they fear, and what they need before making shared decisions.
Should we begin before retirement?
Beginning before retirement can be especially useful because you can discuss expectations before new routines become established. Coaching can also help couples who are already retired and want to reset their direction.
Do you provide financial advice?
No. Arthur does not provide financial, tax, investment, legal, or estate-planning advice. Coaching may help you clarify lifestyle priorities and questions to discuss with your qualified financial and legal professionals.
How long does couples coaching take?
The right length depends on your goals and readiness. Some couples need a focused series of conversations; others benefit from a more comprehensive engagement with reflection, experiments, and accountability. The first conversation helps determine the best fit.
